Report: Former Penn State Football Linebacker Amare Campbell Transfers To Tennessee

Former Penn State football linebacker Amare Campbell has committed to transfer to Tennessee, per On3’s Hayes Fawcett. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

Campbell was initially a three-star recruit out of Manassas, Virginia, in the class of 2023. He was ranked as the No. 109 linebacker and No. 35 player from Virginia, according to 247Sports’ Composite rankings. He committed to North Carolina in August 2022, choosing the Tar Heels over Maryland and West Virginia.

After two strong years in Chapel Hill that included a 6.5-sack campaign in 2024, Campbell entered the transfer portal, only to withdraw after it closed. When the second window opened after spring practice, Campbell re-entered the portal and committed to Penn State, answering former head coach James Franklin’s call for linebacker help.

His lone season in Happy Valley was a success, earning All-Big Ten Third Team honors while anchoring the defense. In 13 games, the junior made 103 tackles with 9.5 tackles-for-loss, three sacks, a pass defended, and a game-winning fumble recovery for a touchdown against Rutgers in late November.

Campbell joins Xavier Gilliam as former Penn State defenders to follow former defensive coordinator Jim Knowles to Tennessee.
