Former Penn State Women’s Soccer Midfielder Sam Coffey Signs With Manchester City

Former Penn State women’s soccer midfielder Sam Coffey signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with Manchester City Women on Wednesday. She was transferred from her former team, the Portland Thorns, to Manchester City.
Coffey spent the first two years of her college career at Boston College before she transferred to Penn State in 2019. During her three seasons with the Nittany Lions, she played 62 games, scored 25 goals, and accumulated 30 assists. She became the 50th player in NCAA women’s soccer history to score and assist 40 goals in her college career.
After her college career, Coffey was drafted by the Portland Thorns in the first round of the 2021 NWSL draft. In her three seasons with the Thorns, the midfielder scored five goals and had 17 assists. She played a crucial role in leading the Thorns win the NWSL Championship in her debut season.
Due to success in the NWSL, Coffey has earned 42 appearances with the United States national team. She has scored five goals and assisted four during her time with the national team. She played a crucial role in leading the United States to a gold medal in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup, and the SheBelieves Cup.
Coffey will bring her experience to a Manchester City team that is looking to win the Women’s Soccer League this season for the first time since 2016 after it finished runner-up last season.
