Michigan Man Arrested After State College Regional Airport Incident

Police arrested a Michigan man after an incident that closed State College Regional Airport early Sunday morning.

Local law enforcement was dispatched at around 2:15 a.m., where 46-year-old Jeffrey W. Roeder was allegedly loitering and hiding when approached. Roeder is alleged to have been damaging computers and chairs in the baggage claim before police arrival.

According to police, Roeder had a knife and threatened to stab an officer when approached. He hid in the rental car area and refused to come out when prompted to do so. Roeder said he was high on methamphetamine, according to an arrest affidavit filed shortly after the incident.

Officers say he continued to use the knife to damage airport walls and chairs. The Centre County Tactical Response Team tasered Roeder and used a bean bag to subdue him. Roeder continued swinging the knife and caused a laceration to an officer’s hand.

Centre County Airport Executive Director Ralph Stewart said there was an unattended backpack in the parking lot, but authorities cleared it before the airport reopened. Two flights were delayed, and the airport resumed normal operations at 8:30 a.m.
