Penn State Men’s Hockey Holds At No. 8 in USCHO Poll

Penn State men’s hockey swept its weekend series with unranked Notre Dame, outscoring the Fighting Irish 10-4 over Friday and Saturday’s victories, but it didn’t lead to them rising in the USCHO rankings.

In the latest USCHO poll released on Monday, the men’s hockey team stayed at No. 8 with a 16-6-0 record. They currently sit second in the Big Ten standings with 25 points and No. 6 in the NPI, the new formula that determines seeding for the NCAA Tournament.

Michigan continues its stranglehold on the No. 1 spot, picking up a season-high 49 first-place votes. Michigan State jumped two spots after a weekend sweep of now-No. 5 Wisconsin, while Western Michigan moves up to No. 3 with the lone other first-place vote.

No. 4 North Dakota jumps a spot, as does No. 6 Quinnipiac, with Wisconsin in between them. Minnesota-Duluth comes in at No. 7, just 27 points ahead of Penn State, while No. 9 Denver sits 106 points behind.

Penn State remains the lowest-ranked of the four Big Ten teams in the top 20. Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Minnesota all continue not to receive votes, while previous non-conference opponents Arizona State (13 points) and RIT (1 point) get consideration.

The men’s hockey team heads on the road to Madison for a two-game weekend set against No. 5 Wisconsin, starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, January 23. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Plus.
