Penn State Wrestling Remains At No. 1, Maintains Six Atop Individual Weight Classes In National Polls

The Nittany Lions had another productive weekend on the Resilite as they picked up another two shutouts, paving the way for yet another No. 1 ranking in the NWCA coaches poll. Penn State defeated No. 24 Indiana 48-0 and Maryland 51-0 to improve to 11-0 on the season, in which it has outscored its opponents 480-19.

Penn State received all but one first-place vote, with No. 2 Ohio State claiming the remaining vote as the Buckeyes improved to 14-0 after defeating No. 9 Minnesota and No. 6 Nebraska this past weekend.

On the individual front, Penn State maintained its dominance throughout eight weight classes, with six wrestlers still ranked at their top spots and two others placing within the top 5 according to this week’s Intermat rankings.

Braeden Davis dropped a spot to No. 12 this week after picking up two major decision victories over No. 24 Henry Porter of Indiana and Dario Lemus of Maryland. The Nittany Lion connected on a combined 12 takedowns in the two matches.

Luke Lilledahl, Shayne Van Ness, Mitchell Mesenbrink, Levi Haines, Rocco Welsh, and Josh Barr all maintained their top-ranked status.

Marcus Blaze kept his No. 4 rank at 133 pounds, PJ Duke is still No. 3 at 157 pounds, and Cole Mirasola maintained his No. 12 rank at heavyweight.

Penn State wrestling is back in action on Friday, January 30, when the Nittany Lions host No. 6 Nebraska in the Bryce Jordan Center at 8 p.m. The match will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
