Cue To Laugh: An Inside Look At The Second Floor Comedy Club

For the comedy fans out there, Second Floor Comedy Club has been carrying State College’s scene for a quarter of a century. Venues downtown may offer “real” comedians, but Second Floor offers a comfortable space for students to mess around and tell jokes, or just to observe and enjoy.

Named after its original location, Carnegie 113, the 25-year-old club has been hosting open mics under our noses all this time. Every week, students are invited to sign up or just have fun watching everyone else work on their material.

I sat down with third-year student Amanda Quinn, Second Floor’s social media manager, after the show to hear about her experience with the club.

“You don’t even have to go up. I didn’t go up for a whole semester…it’s just really fun and a good way to de-stress after hard classes.”

Public speaking may be a challenge for many, but the atmosphere is welcoming and puts you at ease immediately. Every comic has a walk-up song, and after each set, the crowd is eager to give constructive criticism and help the comedians hone their craft that much more.

Beyond the open mics, Second Floor has a handful of bigger shows throughout the year, including the annual “Triple Show”, a collaboration with two other campus comedy clubs — Full Ammo Improv and Derby Comedy Troupe — which happened on February 6th. The open mics also occasionally serve as auditions for bigger shows, which are advertised on their Instagram.

So, if you think you’ve got jokes, stop by one of the Second Floor Comedy Club’s open mics. They happen every Tuesday at 8:30 pm in Kern 112, and are open to all comedians and comedy fans alike.
