No Refund Theatre Presents: MoonBEAM

Just in time for spring break, No Refund Theatre has graced us with another show. “MoonBEAM,” an original production written and directed by Kylie Clark, is a genre-bending sci-fi thriller that keeps you glued to your seat from the second the lights go up.

The starship MoonBEAM travels through space, collecting materials from moons for mysterious purposes. The crew, like any, has its differences, but from early on, it’s clear that something sinister is going on. Suddenly, the captain enters a coma, and the panicking crew discovers an infection is taking them out one by one. As the crew dwindles, their true natures are revealed, and no one is safe.

On paper, a sci-fi/horror show doesn’t look like it would work, especially for a student club. High-concept stories with futuristic technology and aliens are more easily done in post, which, unfortunately, is not a luxury that theatre has. And yet, MoonBEAM can sell it without a hitch. The makeup and sets were intricate and pulled you directly onto the ship, and the thrills of the script make you afraid to be aboard with all those crazies. As expected, Clark and the whole NRT team delivered.

No Refund Theatre’s new show — an original! — will be at Forum 111 from March 5 to 7 at 8 pm. It’s a rare opportunity to see something so ambitious put out by a fellow student — I wouldn’t miss it.
