Penn State Leaving Its Mark On The 2026 Winter Olympics

There might be two more days left in the 2026 Winter Olympics, but the five Penn Staters competing in the Games have finished representing their countries, and history was made.

Here’s a look at the list of Penn Staters who competed in the Winter Olympics and how they fared in the sport they competed in.

Tessa Janecke

Penn State women’s hockey forward Tessa Janecke became the first Penn Stater in history to win the gold medal at the Winter Olympics, as the USA defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime.

The last Penn Stater to medal in the Winter Olympics was Allison Baver in the 2010 Winter Olympics, when she won the bronze medal in the women’s 3000-meter relay in short-track speed skating as part of the USA’s relay team.

Despite not scoring any goals in the Olympics, Janecke finished with five assists, which was tied for second-most on the team. Now she will return to Penn State as the Nittany Lions prepare for the postseason after winning their fourth consecutive AHA regular-season title.

Jessica Adolfsson & Nicole Hall

After Jessica Adolfsson was named to Team Sweden for the second consecutive Winter Olympics, the former Penn State women’s hockey defender scored her first Olympic goal in Sweden’s 6-1 win over Italy in group-stage play. She and forward Nicole Hall led Sweden to an unbeaten group stage and to the semifinals of the Olympics before being eliminated by the USA.

This put them in the bronze medal match against Switzerland, which they lost to Canada in the semifinals. However, they came up short of winning the bronze medal as Sweden lost 2-1 in overtime. Adolfsson finished with one goal and no assists, and Hall did not record a stat as Sweden finished 4th in the Winter Olympics.

Matilde Fantin

Freshman Penn State women’s hockey forward Matilde Fantin, representing Italy, had a successful Olympic campaign, finishing as the leading scorer of the host nation with three goals.

Fantin led Italy to the quarterfinals before being eliminated by the USA. The freshman will look to carry this momentum with the Nittany Lions as they get ready to host the AHA Tournament at Pegula Ice Arena, which begins on February 27.

Dan Barefoot

Outside of women’s hockey, Penn State alum Dan Barefoot made his first-ever appearance at the Winter Olympics in the sport of skeleton. Skeleton is one of the three sled sports, alongside bobsled and luge, with a single rider flying headfirst down the track on a lightweight sled.

The 2013 Penn State graduate did not medal for Team USA, finishing 20th in men’s skeleton and 10th in the first-ever mixed team event alongside Kelly Curtis.
