Penn State has awarded its one millionth degree at summer commencement ceremonies on Saturday, the school announced.

The historic milestone comes 170 years after the university was founded as the Farmers’ High School in 1855 and 165 years after the school awarded its first Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degrees to 11 students in 1861.

Penn State is the third university in the United States to surpass the one million mark, joining Michigan and Indiana.

“This remarkable milestone honors the lasting legacy of Penn State’s past graduates, while illustrating the University’s ongoing commitment to educate, empower and support future generations,” Penn State President Neeli Bendapudi said in a news release.

“We are incredibly proud of our alumni, whose achievements and leadership are making a profound difference in communities across Pennsylvania. Our newest graduates — like those before them and those still to come — join a remarkable network of Penn Staters committed to the pursuit of knowledge, community impact and service, and we can’t wait to see how they continue to change the world.”

Before Saturday, Penn State had awarded more than 999,400 cumulative degrees. It awarded nearly 2,700 diplomas to students University-wide on Saturday, officially crossing the millionth-degree milestone.

To celebrate the milestone, Gov. Josh Shapiro will make a statewide proclamation marking the historic milestone and Penn State’s impactful history across Pennsylvania. Local proclamations from State College Mayor Ezra Nanes, and the Borough of State College and Centre County commissioners will also be made.

The Berkey Creamery will release a limited-time commemorative ice cream flavor voted on by the Penn State community. It will be announced later this week.

“Reaching 1 million degrees is a remarkable milestone that reflects not only Penn State’s long-term commitment to higher learning and public service, but also Penn Staters’ commitment to their communities and each other,” David Kleppinger, chair of the Penn State Board of Trustees said.

“This proud moment belongs to the generations of students, faculty, staff and community members who have come together in supporting its mission and will continue to do so for generations to come.”
