Penn State Wrestling Remains At No. 1, Improves To Nine In Top 5 In National Polls

Penn State wrestling is heading into the postseason as the undisputed favorites. The Nittany Lions collected their 86th straight dual victory on Friday night, defeating Princeton 50-0, which included nine bonus point victories.

Penn State wrestlers went 139-11 this season, only giving up three bonus-point defeats. Of the 139 wins, the Nittany Lions tallied 29 major decisions, 47 technical falls, and 27 pins while supporting a 486-42 takedown differential.

In the final NWCA coaches poll of the season, the Nittany Lions claimed every first-place vote with Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, and Nebraska finishing out the top 5.

As for Intermat’s individual rankings, there was very little movement this week.

Braeden Davis dropped from No. 12 to No. 14 at 141 pounds after picking up a close 11-8 decision victory against Matthew Martino.

Cole Mirasola moved up to a career-high No. 5 ranking after being No. 6 last week. The Nittany Lion has found his groove at the heavyweight class, rattling off two straight victories. This past week, Mirasola picked up a 21-6 technical fall over Princeton’s Sebastian Garibaldi.

Penn State’s true freshmen Marcus Blaze and PJ Duke remained at No. 2 and No. 4 in the country in their respective weight classes.

Luke Lilledahl, Shayne Van Ness, Mitchell Mesenbrink, Levi Haines, Rocco Welsh, and Josh Barr all remained at their top spots heading into the postseason.

Penn State will be back in action when the Nittany Lions host the Big Ten Championships in the Bryce Jordan Center from March 7-8.
