Report: Penn State Hoops Hiring Former Denver Nuggets General Manager Calvin Booth As Consultant

Penn State men’s basketball is reportedly hiring former Denver Nuggets general manager and alumnus Calvin Booth as a consultant to help with roster management, per Jon Sauber of the Centre Daily Times.

Booth was Penn State’s starting center for four seasons in the late 1990s, leading the Big Ten in blocks all four seasons with career averages of 11.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks in 29 minutes per game. After winning the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Year award in 1998, he was selected No. 35 overall by the Washington Wizards in 1999.

Booth played 366 games across 10 seasons in the NBA with seven different teams, usually serving as a backup center. He averaged 3.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, and one block across his NBA career before retiring in 2010.

In retirement, Booth has worked in the front office of several organizations, starting as a scout for the New Orleans Pelicans in 2012 before moving on to the Minnesota Timberwolves and eventually becoming the assistant general manager of the Nuggets in 2017. He was promoted to the lead job in 2020, where he oversaw Denver’s 2023 championship run. He was fired in April 2025.

Booth will join a group that includes basketball general manager Scott Pera to attempt to reform a basketball program that has fallen on hard times, wrapping up a disappointing regular season on Sunday against Rutgers. The Nittany Lions have clinched last place in the Big Ten with just three conference wins.
