Who Is New Lady Lions Head Coach Tanisha Wright?

After seven years, the Carolyn Kieger era is over in Happy Valley.

Now, Penn State women’s basketball is turning to former Lady Lion standout and WNBA veteran Tanisha Wright to take the reins of the program.

Penn State named Wright its next head coach last Monday, bringing back one of the best pieces from the Lady Lions’ most successful era. She also has experience coaching at the highest level.

Here’s what to know about Wright and her path back to Penn State.

Playing Career

During her time in Happy Valley, the Lady Lions made four straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including back-to-back Sweet 16 runs and an Elite Eight appearance in 2004. Penn State also won consecutive Big Ten regular-season titles and was ranked in the AP Top 25 every year Wright played.

She made her name on the defensive end, winning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year three straight times from 2003 to 2005 while also being named to the Big Ten first-team all three seasons.

By her senior year, Wright had become one of the top guards in the conference, averaging over 19 points per game while also usually defending the opponent’s best player.

Wright finished her collegiate career with over 1,900 points, along with more than 600 rebounds and 250 steals, and then was selected No. 12 overall by the Seattle Storm in the 2005 WNBA Draft.

She spent the majority of her career in Seattle, where she helped her team reach the playoffs year after year and was part of the team that won the WNBA Championship in 2010.

Wright earned five All-Defensive First Team selections and two Second-Team honors and established herself as one of the best perimeter defenders for nearly a decade.

She later spent time with the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx before finishing her playing career back in New York, retiring in 2019 after 14 seasons in the league.

Wright finished her WNBA career with over 450 games played and more than 400 steals.

Coaching Career

Wright’s transition into coaching started while she was still playing, beginning as an assistant at Charlotte in 2017.

She later joined the Las Vegas Aces as an assistant, where the team made a run to the 2020 WNBA Finals.

Wright got her first head coaching opportunity with the Atlanta Dream in 2021, stepping into a rebuilding organization. In her first season, the Dream finished 14-22, but the year was looked at as a step forward.

Atlanta showed improvement over the next two seasons, going 19-21 in 2023 and leading the team to back-to-back playoff appearances. However, both playoff runs ended in the first round, losing to Dallas in 2022 and New York in 2024.

Wright also played a huge role in developing young talent, most notably helping guide Rhyne Howard to winning Rookie of the Year in 2022. Howard is now one of the WNBA’s best players.

Despite the progress, the dream finished 15-25 in 2024, and the organization decided to fire Wright after the postseason loss to the Liberty.

After four years in Atlanta and an overall record of 48-68, Wright was fired following the 2024 season. She spent the 2025 season as an assistant with the Chicago Sky before being hired by Penn State.

On the international level, Wright served as the scout coach for the Women’s National team for Team USA at the 2024 Olympics.
