Penn State Wrestling Delivers Strong Showing At The U.S. Open

The Penn State Nittany Lions and the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club affiliates delivered an impressive showing at the U.S. Open Wrestling Championships this past weekend. The Nittany Lions had 13 wrestlers compete in men’s freestyle at the senior level.

The Nittany Lions put together a solid showing at the tournament, with three wrestlers in the senior men’s freestyle bracket making it to the finals in their respective weight classes and all three taking home the gold.

How It Happened

57kg: Luke Lilledahl

Reigning U.S. Open champion Luke Lilledahl had another impressive showing at the tournament. He received a first-round bye before opening his tournament with a dominant 12-1 technical fall over Natan Cant of Colorado Mesa. He followed that with a 3-1 decision over Antonio Mills in the quarterfinals, then cruised through the semifinals with a 10-0 technical fall over Liam Cronin of Nebraska RTC, driven by five takedowns.

In the final, Lilledahl met Spencer Lee, who had defeated him at Final X last year to earn a spot on the world team. Trailing 4-1, Lilledahl battled back, getting to Lee’s ankle for a takedown to cut the lead 4-3. With seconds remaining, Lilledahl struck again for a second takedown to take the lead 5-4 and claim the gold medal at 57kg.

The win marks Lilledahl’s second Senior U.S. Open title, punching his ticket to Final X once again.

61kg: Marcus Blaze

True freshman Marcus Blaze delivered a standout performance, making a deep run through the bracket. After receiving a first-round bye, Marcus Blaze picked up two straight technical falls to advance to the semifinals, where he tallied three takedowns in a 6-1 decision over Seth Gross of the Wisconsin RTC.

In the finals, Blaze faced a familiar opponent in Ohio State’s Ben Davino, who edged him 2-1 in their previous meeting in the NCAA semifinals. This time, Blaze stayed composed throughout the match and leaned on his strength in freestyle. He came away with an impressive 4-1 victory to capture the gold medal and secure his spot at Final X.

65kg: Nate Desmond

Nate Desmond opened with a first-round bye before cruising to a 10-0 technical fall over Ruben Calderon. His run was halted in the next round, where he fell to former Nittany Lion Beau Bartlett in an 11-0 technical fall.

65kg: Kyison Garcia

After receiving a first-round bye, Kyison Garcia faced a tough test in his opening bout, falling 10-0 by technical fall to former Nittany Lion David Evans of the Utah Valley RTC, ending his run in the bracket.

70kg: Tyler Kasak

After redshirting this season, Tyler Kasak has had more opportunities to compete in freestyle, including this weekend at the U.S. Open. Kasak opened with a first-round bye, then earned a 12-2 win over Cody Welker in the second round. He followed with a 5-2 decision against Javion Jones of Arkansas RTC and a tight 7-6 victory over Edward Scott in the quarterfinals.

Kasak was leading Virginia Tech’s Caleb Henson in the semifinals before being forced to medically forfeit midway through the match. The nature of the injury is unclear, though he appeared to grab his face before going down. In his fifth-place match against Alec Pantaleo, the bout ended in a forfeit in Pantaleo’s favor.

70kg: Connor Pierce

Connor Pierce put together two dominant wins to start his tournament, earning 10-0 and 11-0 technical falls over Jose Farias and Nickolas Slatoff. His run came to an end in the third round with a 15-8 decision loss to Ian Parker.

74kg: Joe Sealey

Joe Sealey had a resilient showing at the tournament, rebounding after an early loss to finish on the podium. He opened the tournament with a pair of early wins before dropping a close match to James Green of Nebraska RTC in a 3-2 decision, which moved him into the consolation bracket. From there, Sealey rebounded, earning a 5-3 victory over Cam Amine in the consolation semifinals before defeating former World Team member David Carr by the same score to secure the bronze medal in the senior freestyle division.

79kg: William Henckel

William Henckel made an early statement in the tournament, rolling through his first two matches with back-to-back technical falls over Justin Grant and Brandon Murray of Cyclone RTC. In the quarterfinals, he dropped a tight 5-4 decision in his match against Evan Wick of Titan Mercury Wrestling Club. Henckle closed out the tournament with a decision victory over Bernie Truax to secure fifth place.

86kg: Kyle Dake

Representing the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, Kyle Dake has found consistent success on the international stage. After a first-round bye, Dake opened with a fall over Jackson Sapp. He then picked up victories over Joshua Cordio of the Air Force RTC and Caleb DeVos of Jackrabbit Wrestling to advance to the semifinals, where he earned a 6-1 decision over Aeoden Sinclair, earning his spot in the finals. There, he faced Parker Keckeisen and jumped out to an early lead, maintaining steady pressure throughout the match and limiting Keckeisen’s scoring opportunities.

Dake secured the win, 8-2, becoming the third Nittany Lion of the night to capture a gold medal and punch his ticket to Final X.

86kg: Rocco Welsh

Welsh put together a strong early stretch at the tournament, showcasing dominant offense through the first few rounds. He began the tournament with a first-round bye before delivering dominant technical fall wins over Daryus Webb and Dylan Newsome in his opening matches. He faced a tougher test in the quarterfinals but controlled Mehki Lewis for a 5-1 victory.

In the semifinals, Welsh ran into his biggest challenge in former UNI wrestler Parker Keckeisen, who pulled ahead late and sealed the win with a four-point throw. Welsh concluded his tournament run in the fifth-place match, where he dropped his final bout via forfeit to Rylan Rodgers.

92kg: Josh Barr

Josh Barr looked sharp early in the tournament, putting together a pair of commanding wins before his run was cut short. He picked up his first win of the tournament in the second round, earning a 10-0 technical fall over Robert Bates of Cardinal Wrestling Club. He followed that with another fall win over Seth Shumate in the quarterfinals before falling to Michael Machiavello.

During the bout against Machiavello, Barr appeared to be dealing with discomfort in his right knee and left the mat visibly affected. He did not compete in his fifth-place match against Dillion Bechtold, resulting in a disqualification.

97kg: Connor Mirasola

Connor Mirasola put together a steady run through the tournament after receiving a first-round bye. He earned a 10-0 technical fall over William Fulgentes in the second round before dropping a 5-1 decision to Jonathan Aiello of Ohio RTC. Mirasola bounced back in the fifth-place match, earning a 12-1 technical fall over Zane Lanham.

125kg: Cole Mirasola

Cole Mirasola kicked off his tournament with a solid 7-4 decision over Tyrie Houghton of Wolfpack RTC before running into a tough challenge in Cody Merrill, who handed him an 11-0 technical fall defeat.
