Former Penn State Football Offensive Lineman Donovan Smith Announces Retirement

Former Penn State football offensive lineman Donovan Smith is retiring from football, he announced Sunday.
Smith was a four-star recruit coming out of Owings Mills High School, per the 247Sports composite rankings. He was ranked as the No. 26 offensive tackle in the class of 2011 and the No. 6 prospect in Maryland. He committed to Penn State over Maryland, Clemson, Illinois, and Michigan State.
Smith played four years for the Nittany Lions, starting 31 of the 37 games he played. He was a key anchor for the offensive line, blocking for 19 100-yard rushing games. He also blocked for Matt McGloin, who threw for 6,385 yards, and Christian Hackenberg, who threw for 5,932 yards. He finished the 2013 season earning an honorable All-Big Ten Team mention.
In his final year at Penn State, Smith was a redshirt junior under former head coach James Franklin. The team finished 7-6 and 2-6 against Big Ten opponents, but the Nittany Lions won their final game in the Pinstrip Bowl, beating Boston College 31-30.
After the 2014 season, Smith declared for the 2015 NFL Draft. He was drafted No. 35 overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In his first season, Smith was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.
Throughout his time with the Buccaneers, he was one of the most consistent tackles for the team. He played eight seasons in Tampa Bay, starting in 124 of the 130 games. He won a Super Bowl as a starting left tackle in 2021, taking down the Chiefs.
After defeating Kansas City, Smith signed with the Chiefs and started 12 regular-season games. He also started every postseason game and won his second Super Bowl in 2023 against the 49ers.
After the season, Smith remained a free agent in the 2024-25 season and officially announced his retirement in 2026.
Smith now looks to enjoy his time off from football after a great career and winning two Super Bowls. He had a long run and finally called it quits, but had a career to remember as a Nittany Lion, Buccanneer, and a Chief.
