The Best Jerseys We’ve Seen At Penn State Baseball’s Dollar Dog Nights

For those who like going out to a Penn State Dollar Dog Night, this wasn’t your year.
Of the five scheduled Dollar Dog Nights, only three were played. Of those three, two of them were played in pretty chilly temperatures, with only the April 21 edition against Bucknell being what we consider “baseball weather”.
With the final edition against West Virginia rained out on Wednesday night, it’s time to look back on the best jerseys we saw at the very small sample of Dollar Dog Nights this season.
Ben Rice (Home Pinstripes)

Who doesn’t love some Rice? The Yankees’ first baseman has been one of the best hitters in all of baseball over the first month of the MLB season and has made No. 22 his own over the last guy who wore the jersey.
The only knock I’m giving this is that a Yankee jersey isn’t meant to be worn with a name on the back, but I’ll allow it for Rice because you don’t have to deny you bought it for Juan Soto. But that’s why you don’t get the name on the back!
Pete Alonso (Mets City Connect Edition)

Alonso no longer plays for the Mets, but he’s a perfectly acceptable jersey to wear if you’re a Mets fan. If a player leaves on good terms and has a good legacy with your franchise, the jersey is timeless. Think a Giants’ Odell Beckham Jr. jersey.
Not a fan of this design, though. If it were the old black jerseys, that’d be the best one here.
Nameless Marlins (City Connect Edition)

These are pretty sleek. There are a lot of very good Marlins’ alternate jerseys, and they’re all a better wear than their main jerseys. I will say, I wish they kept the homages of the Cuban Sugar Kings in their regular rotation. Do they fit the color scheme? No, but they’re still gorgeous.
Ronald Acuña Jr. (2023 City Connect Edition)

I’m pretty mixed on this one. It’s an homage to the old uniforms they wore in the 1970s and is a tribute to Hank Aaron, one of the greatest baseball players ever. The more you learn about the uniform, the cooler it gets.
Mookie Betts (Red Sox Home)

Life as a Red Sox fan must not be very fun lately. After all, they’ve traded away their last two franchise players for scraps just so they wouldn’t have to pay them. Maybe things will turn around now that they’ve fired Alex Cora, and the new manager can make a paltry offense play better.
Mookie Betts was exceptional in Boston, particularly in his 2018 AL MVP season.
Paul Skenes (Team USA Home)

There were plenty of Skenes jerseys in the crowd every time Penn State baseball drew a crowd, but none looked better than when he donned the red, white, and blue at the World Baseball Classic in March. While Team USA came up short, it wasn’t any fault of Skenes, who was willing to do whatever it takes for a country he signed up to serve for when he enrolled at the Air Force Academy before breaking out and becoming one of baseball’s best pitchers.
Mike Schmidt (Phillies Throwback Pinstripes)

This was the only true throwback we saw at a Dollar Dog Night, and it’s a classic. Schmidt has a strong case as the best player in Phillies history, as the Hall of Famer spent his entire 18-year career in the City of Brotherly Love and won three MVPs, made 12 all-star teams, won 10 Gold Gloves, and spearheaded the team’s 1980 World Series victory. Many would say he’s the greatest third baseman of all time.
Zdeno Chara (Bruins Home)

It’s still hockey season for some people, so we have three hockey jerseys to round out this list. Chara was a tall, imposing defenseman for the Boston Bruins who played a staggering 24 seasons from 1997-98 to 2021-22, retiring at the age of 45. The Hall of Famer made seven all-star teams, won the 2009 Norris Trophy, and captained the 2011 Stanley Cup champion, the Bruins.
Matvei Michkov (Flyers Home)
The Flyers are in the midst of a heated intrastate rivalry series with the Penguins, and someone decided to rep their Flyers on one of the off-nights. Unfortunately, Michkov has been getting scratched by head coach Rick Tocchet and is not as big a factor in this series as Flyers fans hoped.
Nick Fascia (Beaver Stadium Edition)
Excuse me? This was the single most shocking find: someone not only wearing a Penn State hockey jersey, but a Beaver Stadium edition with No. 10 on the back, which is Nick Fascia’s number.
While there was plenty of Gavin McKenna merchandise worn at baseball games this year, there was only one Fascia jersey. There are a few potential possibilities for this:
- It was Nick Fascia himself.
- It was the person who spent $1,600 on the authentic game-worn edition.
- Someone bought a custom No. 10 on DHgate
I assume it’s #3, but it doesn’t hurt to dream of funnier options.
