Penn State Baseball’s Michael Anderson Breaks Program’s Single-Season Home Run Record

The history books have been rewritten, folks.

Penn State baseball designated hitter Michael Anderson is now the program’s single-season home run king, joining the 20-homer club against Maryland on Thursday night. Previously, Ben Heath’s 19 home runs in 2010 were the record.

Anderson, as part of a day in which he reached base five times and had four RBIs, got a hold of a 1-1 breaking ball from Maryland reliever Andrew Koshy with one out in the fourth inning, obliterating it to deep left field for the record-breaking dinger. In a season where he’s crushed many titanic home runs, this one stacked up, traveling 407 feet with an exit velocity of 110 mph.

His big day buoyed the Nittany Lions’ 13-3 run-rule victory over the Terrapins in the opener of the final weekend series of the season.

It’s been a historic season all around for Anderson, who’s wrapping up his collegiate career after stops at Rhode Island and Arkansas before producing one of the greatest seasons in program history at Penn State.

In 47 games, he’s slashing .363/.475/.753 for a blistering 1.228 OPS. Along with his program record of 20 home runs, he has 52 RBIs, 30 extra-base hits, and 137 total bases (6th in program history). Additionally, he has also set a program record in hit-by-pitches (17), and his .753 slugging percentage is set to be the best by a Nittany Lion since John Schreiner in 1990.

Penn State baseball continues its weekend set in College Park against Maryland at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 15. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Plus.
