Former Penn State Student Charged With Felony Computer Crimes

Former Penn State student Zuoyu “Eric” Wu has been charged with felony counts of unlawful use of computers and computer trespass. While working for the university police, investigators said he accessed protected systems.
Wu is being held at the Centre County Correctional Facility on $2 million bail. The extraordinarily high bail is likely due to perceived flight risk or public safety concerns, according to StateCollege.com. Per Centre Daily Times, the 24-year-old was taken into custody during a large-scale, multi-agency operation at his home on Wednesday.
In the complaint filed by a university police detective, Wu worked as an auxiliary officer starting in 2021 and was responsible for multiple suspicious acts involving radio programming and public safety dispatch. Auxiliary officers are a part-time, unsworn, and non-certified position.
While working for the university police, he allegedly claimed to be a certified Motorola engineer. He showed “interest and proficiency” in the radio system, according to the detective, but no records of his working for the company were found.
On multiple occasions, the report stated, Wu accessed programs such as CLEAN and JNET, which contain protected personally identifying information, vehicle registration data, and criminal histories. Access to either program is limited to authorized staff, not auxiliary officers. A witness reported that Wu logged in using another user name to manipulate the systems.
Wu’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20.
