Penn State Wrestling Coach Cael Sanderson Named The Open Mats’ Coach Of The Year

Penn State wrestling head coach Cael Sanderson has been named Coach of the Year by The Open Mat, the news outlet announced on Friday.

The award comes after Sanderson led the Nittany Lions to their fifth straight national championship in dominant fashion. Penn State was 15-0 in dual meets and 8-0 in the Big Ten. Sanderson helped seven individual wrestlers to Big Ten Championships and the team to a first-place finish by 186 points.

The NCAA National Championships were no different. The Nittany Lions won the team title early on the final day and finished with a record 181.5 points. Four Penn State wrestlers, Mitchell Mesenbrink, Levi Haines, Josh Barr, and Luke Lilledahl, won individual national titles.

The Open Mat hands out three awards annually: Freshman of the Year, Coach of the Year, and Wrestler of the Year.
