Juneteenth is a U.S. federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It specifically marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the Civil War had ended and all slaves were freed.
It was signed into law as a federal holiday when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law in 2021. This is the sixth year State College has officially celebrated the holiday.
