Students Moved To Supplemental Housing With Penn State Over Capacity For Fall 2026

Penn State’s Housing Assignment Office announced Wednesday that the university is over capacity for on-campus housing for the Fall 2026 semester and will rely on additional supplemental housing.
The office’s email housing assignments will be released at noon on Tuesday, July 28, nearly two weeks later than last year’s release date.
“While many students have a positive experience living in supplemental housing, we understand this may not have been what you expected when you accepted the HFS Contract,” an email from Penn State said.
The additional supplemental house units can have up to eight students. Those who selected a standard double room were warned that they could be assigned to a triple-occupancy room, a quad, or supplemental housing.
The email also reminded students that those wishing to move off campus can use the Contract Transfer of Obligation option, which cancels a student’s HFS contract for a $100 administrative fee.
The University attributes the problem to a growing student body, the first-year residency requirement, and building renovations.
Penn State’s Board of Trustees approved a plan in 2025 to start the renewal of the Pollock Halls residence complex at University Park. Currently, both Ritner, Wolf, Hiester, and Shulze residence halls are under construction, but Ritner and Wolf will be ready for the fall semester. The full Pollack renovation should be complete by 2030, the school says.
As in previous years, the Room Exchange eBoard will open at noon on Tuesday, July 28, and remain available until noon on Monday, August 10, allowing interested students to swap assignments.
