Penn State Men’s Hockey Commits Taken In NHL Draft Round Up

Penn State hockey took over the NHL Draft with eight players selected, including Gavin McKenna going No. 1 overall to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

With the eligibility requirements for the draft being only 18 years of age by September 15, many players who may not make their way to college for at least another year were selected.

Here’s a roundup of Penn State commits who were selected but will not come to Happy Valley this fall.

Jaxon Cover

Jaxon Cover was drafted No. 32 overall by the Ottawa Senators in the first round. Cover will become a Nittany Lion in two years after he committed to Penn State in April.

He was originally born in Miami but moved to Grand Cayman at a young age, growing up on roller hockey. He was selected by London in the fourth round of the OHL Draft in 2024. Last season, he had a team-leading 20 goals and finished second with 52 points in 67 games.

Caden Harvey

Caden Harvey was drafted No. 180 by the Edmonton Oilers in the sixth round. The forward will join Penn State in 2027.

The Beaver, Pennsylvania, native plays for the OHL Windsor Spitfires. This season, he had 11 goals and 23 assists. He was a fifth-round draft pick by Windsor, but quickly became a dominant player.

Pierce Mbuyi

Pierce Mbuyi was drafted No. 86 by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round of the draft. The forward seems set to come to Happy Valley for the 2027-28 season, as he will return to the Owen Sound Attack.

In his first season in the OHL, he scored 29 goals and 23 assists for 52 points in 63 games. He was named OHL Rookie of the Year in 2024-25. The forward comes from Mississauga, Ontario.

Quinn McKenzie

Quinn McKenzie was drafted No. 222 in the seventh round by the New Jersey Devils. It’s unclear weather he will be joining the Nittany Lions for the 2026-27 season with conflicting reports.

McKenzie had 21 goals and 30 assists in 65 games for the Soo Greyhounds in the OHL this season, jumping from Shattuck St. Mary’s.

Alexander Karmanov

Alexander Karmanov was drafted No. 201 by the San Jose Sharks in the seventh round. As a freshly turned 18-year-old, Karmanov likely won’t make the move from the North Bay Battalion in the OHL to Happy Valley until the 2028-29 season.

Standing at 7-foot-1, he is the tallest player drafted in NHL history.
