Penn State Baseball Pitcher Colin Fitzgerald Signs With Athletics As UDFA

Penn State baseball right-handed starting pitcher Colin Fitzgerald has signed with the Athletics as an undrafted free agent, the team announced on Wednesday.

Fitzgerald, originally from Lititz, Pennsylvania, committed to Maine out of Manheim Township High School and spent his first four collegiate seasons with the Black Bears. With Maine, he posted a 6.11 ERA across 45 games and 31 starts, with 171 strikeouts to 101 walks in 199 innings from 2022-25, missing 2024 with an injury.

After making First-Team All-America East in 2023 and appearing in the NCAA Tournament, Fitzgerald transferred to Penn State for his fifth and final season in 2026, where he served as the team’s ace and Friday night starter throughout the season.

Missing just one start due to an illness, he pitched to a 6.51 ERA in 13 starts with 67 strikeouts to 31 walks in 56.2 innings, the highest strikeout rate of his career.

It wasn’t always pretty for Fitzgerald, but there were bright moments, including a masterful quality start on the road in late April against an Oregon team that would host an NCAA Tournament regional, racking up a career-high 12 strikeouts.

Fitzgerald is the second Nittany Lion to sign a professional contract this summer after All-American designated hitter Michael Anderson inked his deal following his fifth-round selection on Sunday.

Two incoming Penn State freshmen were also selected on Sunday and have yet to decide whether to sign and forgo college or join the Nittany Lions in 2027.
