Penn State football has partnered with Socios.com to create a Penn State Nittany Lions Fan Token, the fan engagement and rewards app announced on Tuesday.

Penn State is one of five major US college sports teams to join the platform, joined by LSU, Maryland, Texas A&M, and Michigan State. Socios.com plans to expand to over 30 schools over the next year.

“Fan Tokens are utility tokens designed to provide fans with the ability to directly support their schools’ athletic programs while opening the door to new engagement experiences, rewards and access,” Socios.com said on its website. “Through them, supporters can vote on fan-focused decisions, participate in exclusive experiences, unlock unique benefits, and connect with their favorite teams in new ways.”

Under “expected utilities,” Socios.com said Penn State fans will get official polls, rewards, and fan experiences before the end of 2026. Example rewards listed were merchandise and tickets.

Fan-token supply will be tied to Penn State and individual athletes’ performance, with a “meaningful portion” of revenue generated from the sale of the tokens going toward NIL for student-athletes.

Socios.com says the tokens will bring “a new layer of funding that is publicly visible, on-chain, and that provides a direct and transparent connection between alumni support and funding.”

The NIL activations will be administered by Playfly Sports, a college sports revenue maximization company.

The goal with the tokens is to build an active fan community where those that hold tokens get rewards and utilities linked directly to them. They work as a type of “membership” to being a Penn State fan, built around participation instead of proximity to the team.

Penn State joins multiple other sports teams around the world with Fan Tokens, including the Premier League’s Arsenal and Manchester City, and national soccer teams such as Spain and Argentina.

Penn State football did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
