Report: Penn State Football Legend Michael Mauti To Join Matt Campbell’s Staff

Penn State football legend Michael Mauti is joining Matt Campbell’s staff as the director of football engagement, per Mark Brennan of Lions247.

The role, according to Lions247, will entail serving as a liaison between current players and key financial supporters of the football program, including former lettermen.

Mauti was a star linebacker at Penn State from 2008-12, whose decision to stay and be a leader during a time of unprecedented uncertainty culminated in an exceptional senior season, which saw him make 96 tackles, three interceptions, three forced fumbles, and 2.5 sacks. He was named a First-Team All-American and the Big Ten Linebacker of the Year for his efforts.

Mauti fell to the seventh round of the 2013 NFL Draft due to a third ACL tear that he suffered late in the 2012 season, but stayed in the NFL for five seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints, making 75 tackles across 58 games.

In retirement, he’s remained an ambassador to a program that his family is well familiar with, as his older brother and father both also donned the blue and white.

Since being hired, Campbell has made it a priority to integrate alumni into a program he is trying to hit the ground running with, knowing that picking up an entirely new program is a lot more complicated than it looks.

He’s retained and hired several lettermen and made it a priority to drill the honor and prestige of the program into his players, something that a legend like Mauti will only amplify.
