Penn State University Police and Public Safety will conduct a full-scale active attacker training exercise Sunday, per StateCollege.com.

The exercise is scheduled for approximately 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on August 16 at the Student Health Center on Eisenhower Road. Penn State emphasized that the exercise is not connected to an actual threat or recent incident.

Students, employees, visitors, and community members should expect increased police and emergency vehicle activity, loud noises, and temporary road and parking restrictions around the Student Health Center throughout the day.

Access to the training area will be restricted and the university is asking people to avoid the area while the exercise is underway.

Training will involve Penn State University Police and other university units, as well as local law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and emergency medical services. Participants will use role players, emergency vehicles, and simulated activities to recreate an active attacker scenario in a controlled environment.

The exercise is designed to test communication and decision making among the participating agencies and emergency responders.

Normal university operations outside of the exercise area are expected to continue as usual.

No PSUAlert notification will be issued for the training unless an unrelated emergency occurs. If a real emergency takes place during the exercise, the training will be paused or stopped, and responders will transition to addressing the actual incident.

Penn State said that detailed findings from the exercise will not be publicly released due to security concerns.

The exercise is part of the university’s ongoing emergency preparedness and all-hazards emergency management efforts. Officials said full-scale exercises allow responders to evaluate emergency procedures and build familiarity with one another before a real emergency occurs.
