14 Charged In Cocaine Trafficking Investigation Tied To Penn State Fraternities

Fourteen people have been charged in connection with an alleged cocaine trafficking operation centered around two off-campus fraternity houses, Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday announced Monday.

Authorities allege the operation ran throughout 2023 and 2024 and involved cocaine being transported in large quantities from Philadelphia and New York to State College, where it was allegedly packaged and distributed.

According to Sunday, investigators identified activity connected to off-campus houses associated with Delta Upsilon, which Penn State put on interim suspension on Monday, and Sigma Chi, which Penn State suspended in 2021 and operates without university recognition.

The cocaine was allegedly packaged at the fraternity houses before being distributed.

Authorities allege Agostino Abbatiello and Thomas Robinson, both senior fraternity members, were at the center of the operation, with Abbatiello as the head.

A witness who testified against Abbatiello called him “the largest dealer of cocaine for Penn State University students.” An arrest warrant has been issued for Abbatiello.

Mohammed Hurabi and Lars Zeepvat were also identified as primary dealers and, along with Abbatiello and Robinson, are charged with felony corrupt organizations, among other felony and misdemeanor counts.

Robert Zanolla is charged with felony counts of conspiracy and criminal use of a communication facility.

Eight others, Liam Smith, Michael Brogno, Kaden Howe, Connor Hurleigh, Seth Beardsley, Kyle Ridpath, Daniel Price, and Charles Wiseman, are charged with misdemeanor counts of possession and drug paraphernalia.

Paul Robinson, Thomas Robinson’s father, is also accused of attempting to hide evidence connected to the investigation, according to Sunday.

At least four of those charged are current Penn State students.

The university “will be addressing these charges through the individual student conduct process for current students,” according to a statement.

“Student Affairs also is moving quickly to establish additional educational and hazing prevention efforts that can be enhanced during the first weeks of the semester.”

Most defendants facing felony charges have been arraigned after criminal complaints were filed. Abbatiello remains subject to an active arrest warrant.

Sunday emphasized the seriousness of the allegations and said law enforcement will continue monitoring drug activity involving students and those connected to Penn State.

“Not only have we filed these charges, but I promise you that we will be watching, for students who think about going to college, being away from home for the first time… there are always going to be ramifications for your actions,” Sunday said to Fox 29.

Investigators also allege that packaging cocaine was treated as a task for fraternity pledges during initiation.

The alleged drug activity occurred off campus. Sunday said there is no evidence that cocaine was packaged on Penn State property. Law enforcement officials have not charged anyone with hazing-related crimes, and the investigation remains ongoing.

“There is no city, county, community that exists that doesn’t have to deal with issues such as drug use, drug dealing, addiction and things of that nature,” Sunday said.

“This is something that occurs all throughout our country and all throughout the world. And that being said, we take it very, very seriously, which is why we conducted this investigation and which is why we filed the charges we filed.”

Unsecured bail was set at $1.5 million for Thomas Robinson, $1 million for Paul Robinson, $500,000 for Hurabi and Zeepvat, and $250,000 for Zanolla.
