Penn State Warns Students Of Measles Outbreak After 14 Cases In Centre County

Penn State officials released a statement Thursday warning students of a measles outbreak and encouraging folks to take precautionary actions.

The university said there are no confirmed measles cases at the University Park campus. However, there have been 14 confirmed cases in Centre County, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

There are also confirmed cases in the counties home to 10 of its campuses, the university said in the release.

“Students who do not have presumed immunity — either through documentation of two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine or through a previous measles infection — should contact UHS or their primary care provider to discuss vaccination,” Penn State said.

The school added that it does require all incoming students to have the MMR vaccine to “support herd immunity.”

Measles is a highly contagious disease with symptoms including cough, fever, runny nose, and watery eyes. It is most commonly spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and it can remain airborne for up to two hours.

Pennsylvania has 424 total cases since the start of the outbreak, with 94 new cases in the last seven days. Though 73 of those ended in hospitalization, only two led to deaths.

“Everyone is encouraged to locate their vaccination information or proof of immunity, if available, to better understand their risk of exposure,” Penn State said.
