Penn State men’s soccer (2-2-0, 0-0-0 Big Ten) shut out Yale (1-2-0, 0-0-0 Ivy League) 1-0 at Jeffrey Field on Friday Night.

The Nittany Lion offense and the Yale defense dominated the first half. Penn State spent most of the first 45 minutes on offense, but the Bulldogs kept them from scoring. Penn State kept up that offensive dominance in the second half, scoring the only goal needed to win.

How It Happened

Penn State’s best opportunity to score in the first half came on a fast break in the 12th minute, but they failed to find an open shot. The Bulldogs worked their way into the Nittany Lions’ final third multiple times but never had a real opportunity to score.

In the 16th minute, Nehan Hasan took the first shot of the game for Penn State, but it flew wide of the goal.

For the next 10 minutes, the Nittany Lions spent way more time in the attacking third than the Bulldogs, but didn’t take another shot until Beckham Brown volleyed one past the net in the 25th minute. Two minutes later, Penn State took a corner, but failed to get a shot off.

The Nittany Lions continued to dominate possession, preventing Yale from getting any real chance on offense. Hasan took his second shot of the game in the 34th minute, but it was blocked. Yale’s best opportunity to score came with a corner in the 39th minute, but the Nittany Lions quickly regained possession after the Bulldogs couldn’t find an opening.

Penn State brought the ball into the box multiple times in the 42nd and 43rd minutes, including a pair of shots by Sheridan McNish, but the Yale defense remained strong, blocking both.

The first half ended 0-0. Neither keeper made a save in the first 45 minutes.

Yale started the second half by immediately launching the ball out of bounds, and Penn State went on the attack. Amadou Kone fired a shot that was blocked in the 47th minute.

Penn State’s next chance came soon after. Joe Buckley and Hasan took back-to-back shots that were saved by keeper Joshua Linebaugh in the 49th minute before the Bulldogs were able to clear the ball and take some pressure off their defense. Ethan Otterburg took Yale’s first shot in the 50th minute.

That relief didn’t last for long for the Bulldogs. The Nittany Lions quickly got back on offense, where Buckley knocked in a pass from Hasan to give Penn State the 1-0 lead. The score was Buckley’s first collegiate goal.

The Nittany Lions stayed on offense for most of the next seven minutes, shooting four times. Kone and Joseph Sheridan had shots blocked while Linebaugh saved shots from Vladislav Cherny and Grant McIntosh.

Yale’s Nathan Harmon received a yellow card in the 58th minute. Beckham Brown was injured on the play, and Morgan Marshall replaced him. Brown later re-entered the game.

The Bulldogs’ second shot came in the 59th minute when Caleb Layton’s attempt was blocked. Yale kept the ball on offense for most of the next 15 minutes, but failed to take another shot.

Yale’s Daniel Grumann was given a yellow card in the 75th minute, but the Nittany Lions failed to score on the free kick. Marshall fired a shot in the 77th minute, and Penn State took a corner, but Yale headed the ball away.

The Bulldogs’ best scoring chance of the game came on a breakaway in the 83rd minute when Simon Adjakple fired one that just missed to the right of the net. The Bulldogs had another opportunity in the 86th minute, but Sebi Roy’s shot was blocked.

The Penn State bench was given a yellow card in the 88th minute. Yale threatened in the final minutes, but Penn State finished the game on top, 1-0.
