I was scrolling through Threads the other day when a picture of Beaver Stadium caught my eye.

At first, it looked like a normal screenshot from an FS1 broadcast. Then I noticed the shadows stretching across the field, spelling out “WE ARE.”

The image was posted by Tom Mosser, a Penn State graduate and artist who makes plenty of Penn State and sports-inspired art. Mosser took the broadcast shot and turned it into a concept showing how the stadium’s shadows could cast the words across the field.

However Mosser made it; I have one thing to say. Penn State, make this real.

I can’t remember ever seeing another stadium use shadows to create a design on its field. Maybe somebody has, but I haven’t noticed. And if nobody notices your cool stadium feature, does it really count?

Imagine turning in to a Penn State game and seeing “WE ARE” stretched from one side of the field to the other. It would look incredible in person, on television, and in every photo taken inside Beaver Stadium.

More importantly, it makes perfect sense for Penn State. ‘We Are’ is already everywhere. We yell it during games, across campus, and at random people wearing Penn State gear hundreds of miles away from State College, Pennsylvania.

Now, I know what some people are probably thinking: What about the players? Going from a dark shadow into direct sunlight could make it harder to see, especially when someone is trying to catch a football. Players getting blinded mid-route would be less than ideal.

Fair enough.

But football is already played in sun, shade, rain, snow, wind, and whatever weather Happy Valley decides to throw at us that week. The conditions are never perfect, and players are already expected to adjust.

That doesn’t mean Penn State should build it and hope for the best. Test the idea. Study where the shadows would fall and how they would move during a game. Ask the players if it causes a problem. If the design needs to be adjusted, adjust it.

And if it works, do it. The sun always casts shadows, so we might as well make them look cool.
