Two of the seven Penn State branch campuses slated for closure have officially agreed to sell for a combined $6.25 million.

On September 18, the Penn State Board of Trustees voted to approve the sale of the Shenango and Wilkes-Barre campuses, the first two sale agreements the board has approved since announcing in May 2025 that seven branch campuses would close at the end of this academic year.

The Shenango property was sold to JCL Development LLC for $1 million, and the Wilkes-Barre property to HGC Development LLC for $5.25 million.

JCL Development LLC is a redevelopment company based in the Mercer County area, and plans to turn the 13-acre campus into an education hub for workforce training, economic development, and cultural enrichment.

The plans align with an overall reinvestment initiative into downtown Sharon and the Shenango Valley.

HGC Development LLC is a subsidiary of Huntsville Golf Club, a course located directly next to the property in the heart of Luzerne County.

The course was sold to new owners in October 2025. The larger 57-acre campus will turn into a multi-use hub, featuring event and conference spaces for the golf club, as well as for continuing education use, with a partnership planned with Misericordia University, located just a few miles away in Dallas, Pennsylvania

“Penn State has worked, throughout this process, to strike a responsible balance between stewarding the University’s resources and honoring our commitment to each campus community, including Shenango and Wilkes-Barre,” Penn State Vice President for Commonwealth Campuses and Executive Chancellor Renata Engel said in a news release.

Both campuses will remain open through the end of the 2026-2027 academic year, as Penn State previously announced.

The transition support systems in place for students and employees will continue to remain in place. Penn State’s work to find sale agreements for the closing campuses is far from done, however.

Discussions continue for Penn State DuBois, Fayette, Mont Alto, New Kensington, and York, the five remaining closing campuses.
