The Penn State Board of Trustees approved four renovation and construction projects on Friday.

The projects include renovations to the Henderson Building, a major addition to the Animal Diagnostic Lab at University Park, and increased funding for the already approved Applied Research Laboratory.

Here’s a deeper look at the four construction projects.

Animal Diagnostic Lab

The Board of Trustees has approved a $65.3 million addition to the Animal Diagnostic Laboratory on the University Park campus.

The lab’s renovations are meant to “meet the growing demand for advanced, reliable, and timely diagnostic services supporting animal health and food safety for the commonwealth.”

The Animal Diagnostic Lab is fully accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians and is a part of the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State.

Applied Research Laboratory

The Board of Trustees originally approved the Applied Research Laboratory in November 2024. However, that approval left “shell space” for potential research growth, which a recent contract will now fill.

The Applied Research Laboratory is located at Penn State’s Innovation Park and is a four-story, approximately 80,000-square-foot facility.

The lab hosts space for research activities as well as offices, conference rooms, computing, and building support

Henderson Building

The Board of Trustees also approved a $16.6 million renovation to the Henderson Building.

The project will “modernize key student-facing areas, including general-purpose classrooms and student services spaces, while improving accessibility, restrooms, and building systems.”

The Henderson Building was first built in 1933 and is home to the College of Health and Human Development.

Knowledge Park, Penn State Behrend

Penn State Behrend’s Knowledge Park will also get a $19.2 million upgrade.

The Board of Trustees approved a plan Friday to construct a new 31,300-square-foot facility at the branch campus to “function as an intrapreneurial sandbox and catalyst for Erie County’s economic, innovation and social development.”
