Penn State Campus Recreation has completed renovations to the outdoor tennis courts located next to the west side of the Intramural Building (IM).

Renovations began May 11 and wrapped up on August 18, according to the university. The project updated the 12 regulation-size hard courts after their previous surface reached the end of its usable life.

The renovations included pavement repairs and court resurfacing, along with new exterior fencing, fence posts, gates, tennis nets, and posts.

Penn State also improved accessible pathways, entrances, and sidewalks surrounding the courts.

“The outdoor tennis court renovations adjacent to the IM Building have provided a much-needed update to both playing surface and overall look of the facility,” Steve Kampf, senior director for Campus Recreation, said in a release.

The courts aren’t just for students looking to get a few matches in between classes. Penn State academic colleges also use the space for general health and wellness courses through a partnership with Campus Recreation.

The project was completed through a partnership with Campus Recreation, Penn State’s Office of Physical Plant, and Nastase Construction Inc. Funding for the renovation came from the Student Fee Board.

“This project was made possible through collaboration and has helped create high- quality facilities and a more enjoyable space for students and the campus community,” Kampf said.

The newly renovated courts are now open from dawn to dusk, weather permitting. So, whether you’re the next Jannik Sinner or you’re just trying not to send the ball over the fence, the courts are ready for you.
