Penn State Football Tight End Gabe Burkle Named Campbell Trophy Semifinalist
Penn State football tight end Gabe Burkle has been named a William V. Campbell Trophy semifinalist, the National Football Foundation (NFF) and College Hall of Fame announced Wednesday.
The award annually recognizes the best scholar-athlete in the nation, considering combined academic success, football performance, and exemplary leadership.
Burkle is one of 206 semifinalists, the largest number ever for the award. Schools across every NCAA division and the NAIA nominate one player they consider their best all-around student-athlete.
The redshirt-senior tight end hasn’t gotten off to a strong start offensively in 2026, tallying only one catch for four yards against Buffalo. He did, however, play 28 snaps against the Bulls, the most of any Penn State tight end.
Burkle did not play in the Nittany Lions’ season opener against Marshall due to an injury.
The NFF will pick 12-16 finalists on October 21 and each will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. The winner will be presented at the 68th NFF Annual Awards Dinner in Las Vegas on December 8.
Burkle was also named to the John Mackey Award watch list alongside Benjamin Brahmer.
