Penn State freshmen may no longer have to wait until spring for Greek life recruitment.

Nine fraternities and sororities are opening recruitment to first-year students this semester as Penn State introduces a delayed-fall recruitment for the 2026-2027 academic year. Most Greek organizations will continue to recruit in the spring.

One of the biggest changes for freshmen is the removal of Penn State’s previous credit requirements.

In past years, students generally needed to complete at least 14 credits before participating in recruitment, which meant most freshmen had to wait until their second semester. Transfer students needed at least 27 credits from another institution.

With those requirements gone, first-semester freshmen can now participate in recruitment with chapters that elected the delayed-fall option.

Three Interfraternity Council chapters are participating this fall: Alpha Kappa Lambda, Alpha Rho Chi, and Sigma Nu.

Four Multicultural Greek Council organizations are included for delayed recruitment. Alpha Kappa Delta Phi, Delta Sigma Iota, Sigma Lambda Beta, and Sigma Omicron Pi are also participating.

Omega Phi Alpha and Sigma Alpha are participating through the Panhellenic Council.

The change doesn’t mean all eligibility requirements have disappeared.

Students must be enrolled full-time at University Park and complete an online information session before participating in recruitment. Students who already have an established Penn State GPA must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA. Students also cannot be suspended or expelled.

Chapters participating in delayed-fall recruitment will also have additional requirements. Penn State is requiring increased health and safety training and won’t allow social events during the recruitment period.

The new process marks a change from the deferred recruitment model Penn State introduced in the 2017-18 academic year.

Penn State introduced several changes to fraternity and sorority life following the death of sophomore Timothy Piazza after a night of hazing at Beta Theta Pi in February 2017. Among those changes were requirements that prevented most freshmen from joining a fraternity or sorority during their first semester.

Rather than returning to traditional fall recruitment, Penn State’s new system lets recognized organizations choose to recruit later in the fall or wait until the spring.

The university began reconsidering the approach following a broader review of fraternity and sorority life at University Park.

Penn State commissioned partnerships in 2024 to review the Greek community. More than 140 students, alumni, advisers, university officials, and other stakeholders participated through interviews, focus groups, and other parts of the review.

The review found that Greek life remains a significant part of the University Park community, with more than 6,800 active members. It also identified concerns including competition from unrecognized organizations.

The new recruiting model doesn’t eliminate spring recruitment. Councils and chapters can use delayed fall or deferred spring recruitment depending on their individual requirements.

For freshmen, that means recruitment timing now depends on which organization they’re interested in joining.
