Penn State is moving up the rankings, folks.

The university is ranked No. 22 among public universities and No. 55 overall in U.S. News and World Report’s 2027 “Best Colleges” rankings, released September 22. Both placements rose four spots from the previous year.

Penn State remains the highest-ranked public university in Pennsylvania. It also placed No. 19 among public institutions in the Association of American Universities.

“Guided by our commitment to academic and research excellence and student success, we are building on these strengths,” Penn State Provost Fotis Sotiropoulos said in a university release.

The overall rankings cover 422 national institutions competing in the “National Universities” category. U.S. News places schools in that category if they offer a range of undergraduate majors and graduate programs and emphasize faculty research.

Penn State earned 15 top-25 ratings for undergraduate programs and specialties, with three in the top 10. Its undergraduate engineering program ranked No. 22 out of 216 schools, while undergraduate business ranked No. 24 out of 535.

Among the specialties, the university earned top-10 marks in petroleum engineering (No. 4) and supply chain management and logistics (No. 7), with strong showings in mechanical engineering (No. 12) and production and operations management (No. 13).

The university also ranked No. 34 for undergraduate computer science, No. 43 for economics, No. 50 for psychology, and No. 56 for its Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program.

Penn State placed No. 31 out of 169 national universities on the “Best Colleges for Veterans” list, which considers support for veterans and active-duty service members pursuing a college education.

According to Penn State, the undergraduate program rankings are based on a survey of academic leaders and senior faculty in those fields.
