Penn State Men’s Soccer Drops 2-1 Heartbreaker To Ohio State

Penn State men’s soccer (2-7, 0-5 Big Ten) fell to Ohio State (6-2-2, 1-2-1 Big Ten) 2-1 at Jeffrey Field in the White Out on Friday night.

Penn State scored in the first half of the thrilling game, but Ohio State rallied back to get the win in the final minutes.

How It Happened

Just one minute into the game, Penn State’s Peter Doran got the first shot on net, but it was stopped by Ohio State’s Patrick McLaughlin.

The Nittany Lions got their third foul called just seven minutes into the game.

Penn State got some nice chances to be the first on the scoreboard, but the Buckeye defense denied all attempts.

Late in the 14th minute, the Nittany Lions got a solid opportunity with the ball rolling just in front of the net. Nobody got their foot behind it for a shot.

Both Ohio State and Penn State’s defenses cleared any offensive attempt out of their ends.

Penn State’s freshman goalkeeper, Daniel Peluffo-Wiese, made a diving punch to keep Ohio State off the board in the 25th minute.

In the 32nd minute, Penn State’s offense paid off. Etienne Reck scored in the top center of the net to take the lead 1-0.

The Buckeyes got some fire under them to get a goal in the first half, but Peluffo-Wiese didn’t let anything get by.

Reck went down with a potential injury just under 30 seconds remaining in the first half. There were 10 total fouls going into halftime.

Aaron Hurge took a blistering shot to the top right of the net in the 51st minute, but Peluffo-Wiese made a diving one-handed save to push the ball over the net.

Penn State responded with a heart-racing counter-attack. Amadou Kone got the shot off after his teammates took off to get the one-on-one, but McLaughlin made the save to keep the score 1-0.

Joven Mann went down in the 57th minute and walked off with medical staff.

Ohio State’s Nyle Waugh went down in Penn State’s penalty box in the 62nd minute.

The Buckeyes got a shot just left of the net by Joel Demian, which resulted in a corner kick. Peluffo-Wiese made the ensuing catch.

Penn State kept trying to put the ball in the back of the net again, but Ohio State’s defense cleared any ball inside the 18-yard box.

Ohio State’s Martin Wurschmidt scored off a corner kick in the 87th minute of the game to tie it at 1-1.

Wurschmidt scored off another corner kick with just nine seconds remaining in the game.

The game ended with a total of 19 fouls between both teams.
