Penn State’s Final APPR Recommendations Include Closure Of 47 Academic Programs

The final recommendations from Penn State’s Academic Portfolio and Program Review (APPR) recommend the closure of 47 academic programs, including 11 at University Park, the university announced Monday.
The university said the recommendations stem from low student demand, combined employment opportunities, program realignment, and other factors. Graduate programs are not affected by this review.
Penn State will continue to offer 24 of the listed programs, but through another college.
Across all campuses, 784 undergraduate students, or roughly 1.1% of students, are enrolled in the 47 programs. Nine programs have no currently enrolled students, and 15 have already submitted teach-out proposals or enrollment holds.
The university has no definite timeline for implementing the recommendations.
The university said it will develop a formal teach-out plan to ensure students can complete their degrees in a timely, supported manner. This can span multiple academic years.
Penn State also plans to promote 32 University Park programs over the next year. These programs are those the university highlighted for additional investments because of a “clear potential for growth, innovation or expansion.”
The university will review 37 University Park programs in one year. The review must show the programs are demonstrating progress towards increasing enrollments to sustainable levels.
All recommendations for programs across campuses are outlined in the full APPR spreadsheet.
