Penn State History Lesson: Non-Football White Out Games

Every year since 2004, and more so beginning in 2007, Penn State football has been responsible for creating one of the best atmospheres in all of sports: the White Out.

As most already know, for one home game each season, Penn State encourages fans to pack Beaver Stadium dressed in white clothing, creating a surreal crowd feeling.

However, many fans seem relatively unaware of the fact that many other Penn State sports host a White Out game each year as well. This includes popular sports such as men’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s hockey, and women’s volleyball.

Let’s take a look at how the White Out operates in other stadiums across campus, as well as the outlook for such games during the 2026-27 athletic season.

Men’s Basketball

One of Penn State’s oldest non-football White Out traditions dates back to 2011, when the Nittany Lions declared they would “White Out the Buckeyes” in their matchup against No. 1 Ohio State on March 1.

This senior night game ended in a 21-point loss for the blue and white, but resulted in the sixth-largest crowd in Bryce Jordan Center history at the time.

Most recently, a men’s basketball White Out at Rec Hall on January 22, 2026, yielded an unfortunate 98-71 loss to Wisconsin.

The men’s basketball White Out for 2026-27 is set for January 20 against Purdue.

Women’s Volleyball

Another one of Penn State’s oldest non-football White Out games came in 2011 when women’s volleyball declared White Out conditions for its clash against Northwestern on October 5. In this matchup, the Nittany Lions won, defeating the Wildcats 3-2.

For the 2026 season, women’s volleyball is scheduled to have a White Out against Purdue on October 31, the same day the football team plays Purdue at Beaver Stadium.

In the most recent women’s volleyball White Out, the team defeated No. 7 Wisconsin in a 3-0 sweep on October 10, 2025. This was an important upset for the team, which was ranked No. 19 at the time.

The team’s strong performance in the match propelled it to a relatively successful season that ended at the hands of Texas in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Men’s Hockey

In recent years, men’s hockey has become one of Penn State’s most electrifying sports, and it, too, has a history of White Out games, or Wear White games as it calls them.

On January 13, 2014, Penn State men’s hockey hosted a full-arena Wear White game against the No. 1 Minnesota Golden Gophers. Penn State fell 5-2.

The next season, Penn State hosted two Wear White games on February 6 and March 6, both ending in victories over Wisconsin and Michigan and helping guide the program to its first-ever winning season.

In this year’s Wear White game, the Nittany Lions will take on Wisconsin at Pegula Ice Arena on January 22, 2027. Wisconsin defeated Penn State 5-2 in last season’s Wear White game back in March.

Women’s Hockey

Penn State’s women’s hockey program also advanced from the club level to NCAA Division I at the start of the 2012-13 season and has since begun its own Wear White tradition.

Women’s hockey joined the Wear White parade recently, with its first documented game being the Frozen Four semifinal against Wisconsin on March 20.

Recently, Penn State women’s hockey repeated the tradition, scheduling another Wear White game for the team’s second home game of the season against Ohio State.

Penn State lost a hard-fought 2-1 battle to the Buckeyes.

Men’s Soccer

While the men’s soccer program has struggled in recent years, it doesn’t mean that it’s exempt from White Out tradition.

In 2015, men’s soccer hopped on the White Out train, giving its October 9 game against Maryland the designation. The Nittany Lions ultimately dropped the contest 4-3 to the Terrapins.

Just weeks ago, the Nittany Lions played in the 2026 White Out game against Ohio State. The team led 1-0 for most of the game, but two late Buckeye goals turned it into a heartbreaking 2-1 loss for the blue and white on October 2.

If Penn State could’ve held on, it would’ve been its first conference victory in 364 days.

Women’s Soccer

Penn State women’s soccer’s first White Out comes with a bit of an asterisk.

The game was on October 25, 2009, at Jeffrey Field. The catch? It wasn’t officially titled a White Out or Wear White game; it was a theme called “White House.”

For the purpose of this article, we’ll count it as a White Out.

In this game, Penn State battered Illinois 6-0 in front of 1,324 fans. The convincing win told the story of a successful season for the Nittany Lions, who finished 13-6-2 before Virginia eliminated them in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

In this year’s women’s soccer White Out, Penn State tied Iowa 1-1 on September 24 at Jeffrey Field.
