No. 5 Penn State Women’s Hockey Defeats Lindenwood 3-0

No. 5 Penn State women’s hockey (5-3, 5-1 AHA) took down Lindenwood (4-6, 1-5 AHA) 3-0 at Pegula Ice Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions outshot Lindenwood 66-18 to collect their third consecutive victory. Grace Outwater broke the game open with a goal midway through the third period before Sofia Ismael scored on an empty net to close it out.
How It Happened
Grace Outwater notched the first shot of the game for Penn State, but Lindenwood goaltender Ebba Ridderstolpe stuffed the attempt.
Mikah Keller kept the front foot for Penn State, but Ridderstolpe once again made the save. Abby Stonehouse and Maddalena Bedont both received penalties for hooking and holding the stick, respectively, around five minutes into the contest.
Outwater came out firing after the penalties, but still didn’t sneak one past Ridderstolpe.
Penn State continued pestering the Lindenwood goaltender throughout the first period until Danica Maynard broke the deadlock with a goal assisted by Sofia Ismael and Stonehouse. The Nittany Lions led 1-0 with just under two minutes left in the opening frame.
Ismael knocked around two more shots to end the first period.
Outwater and Nicole Hall notched the first two shots of the second frame as Penn State continued on the front foot. Bedont sent a shot wide from the rear center of the attack zone.
The two teams exchanged runs of five shots each, but neither pierced the veil of the net. Lindenwood’s Elina Zilliox went to the penalty box for two minutes after a minor hooking penalty.
Ismael, Stonehouse, and Sophie Morrow each got shots off during the power play, but failed to double Penn State’s lead.
The Lions’ Tatiana Blichova took a turn in the penalty box for roughing. Keller, Hall, Maynard, Morrow, and Kylie Amelkovich all got shots off.
The Nittany Lions continued shooting through the end of the second period, but didn’t find the elusive second goal.
Megan Hosman received a two-minute penalty for body checking to open the final frame. The game got a little rough with penalties on Paige Cline and Amelkovich, which made it a 4-on-6 with Penn State on the back end.
It didn’t stop Outwater from scoring with 12:33 left in the game to add some cushion to Penn State’s advantage. More penalties ensued before Ismael iced the game with an empty-net goal in the final three minutes as the Nittany Lions secured a 3-0 win.
