From Family Dinners To Flourishing Business: Kathryn’s Finds A Home In State College

Looking for an easy meal to heat up because your class schedule is jam-packed? Look no further, folks. Kathryn’s was built for just that.
Kathryn Fisher is a mother of four who decided to take the leap of faith and start her own business. The Mifflintown, Pennsylvania, native started by delivering and cooking extra for hometown friends.
However, when COVID-19 hit, Fisher thought it would force her to stop. Little did she know it would become a thriving business.
Fisher recently opened her own brick-and-mortar shop in State College and has loved seeing the community while growing her business.
It all began with Fisher’s love for the outdoors and family.
“Whenever it was time to cook dinner, it was like you had to go in, cook it, prep it, and it took so much time,” Fisher said.
Fisher started doubling her meals and freezing some for later in order to save time. As a mom, she always prioritized dinnertime with her family.
“Dinnertime is so special because it’s the time you get if you set that intention with kids to talk about the day, sort out difficulties, or give a safe space for your kids to come to,” Fisher said.
Making these frozen meals gave Fisher more time to make dinner special for her kids.
She could go all out, including setting the table with fancy dishware used only during the holiday season. As a result, her kids got excited to come to dinner — yes, for the food, but more for the extra family time.
This inspired her to start something she thought other busy moms and families could benefit from.
She started doing deliveries in 2020 and eventually grew her business enough that she needed a facility to operate in. It was tough knowing what to do because this idea came from scratch.
“I give a lot of credit to SCORE, a nonprofit organization. They’re retired business owners who help businesses grow, give advice, and more. I got connected with a mentor, pitched my idea, and he helped me get all the pieces,” Fisher said.
Kathryn’s embraces the family-like atmosphere with recipes passed down from her mother and grandmother. Fisher called it “super special” for her and her mom because it’s a tradition that keeps going.
Although her business is successful, Fisher didn’t have an easy path to where she is today.
“The fear and all the questioning, whether it’s a good thing or not, letting all the time pass before you jump on the idea, then once you do the idea, it goes well anyway,” Fisher explained.
Fisher learned a few lessons along the way, but her most important takeaway — from a business perspective and personally — is not to waste time on things; make the decision, go through with it, and move on.
Kathryn’s officially opened in State College on March 7, 2025. The business continues to grow, and Kathryn hopes to keep expanding as she gains more experience.
