Three Penn State Wrestlers To Compete At NWCA All-Star Classic At Rec Hall

Three Penn State wrestlers will compete at next month’s NWCA All-Star Classic at Rec Hall on November 24, FloWrestling announced Monday night.

NCAA champion Josh Barr and 2026 Big Ten champions and national runners-up Shayne Van Ness and Rocco Welsh will compete in their home gym against some of the nation’s finest.

Van Ness, a three-time All-American at 149 pounds, will get an early-season test in what is shaping up to be one of the most loaded weights in recent memory when he squares off with 2025 national champion Caleb Henson from Virginia Tech.

Henson, who redshirted in 2025-26 to wrestle with what is shaping up to be the best Virginia Tech wrestling squad in recent memory, lost to Van Ness in their only previous meeting at the 2023 NCAA Championships. Van Ness won 5-3, sending him to the third-place match as a redshirt freshman.

That weight class will be a war all season long. Last year’s 141-pound champion and runner-up, Sergio Vega and Jesse Mendez, are both expected to move up to join Van Ness, a returning Henson, and reigning national champion Aden Valencia.

At 184 pounds, Welsh will continue his bid at redemption after losing a rematch against Max McEnelly in the finals with a match against No. 5 Brock Mantanona of Michigan, who placed fifth at the NCAA last year.

Mantanona and Welsh met three times last season, with the Nittany Lion prevailing each time. At the dual meet in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Welsh won 8-1, then followed it up with an 8-5 win in the Big Ten Semifinals at the Bryce Jordan Center. The third time would not be the charm for the Wolverine in the NCAA Semifinals, as Welsh won a close 4-3 bout.

At 197 pounds, Josh Barr will attempt to build on his third-place finish in last year’s Hodge Trophy voting and face his first test at the All-Star Classic against No. 3 Stephen Little out of Little Rock. Little is a three-time All-American who finished third at last year’s NCAA Championships.

It’ll be their third meeting. Barr broke onto the scene by upsetting Little at the Journeyman Collegiate Duals in December 2024, 4-1, en route to his runner-up finish at the 2025 NCAA Championships. In a rematch at the 2026 Southern Scuffle in January 2026, Barr majored him, 9-1.

The NWCA All-Star Classic is a college wrestling showcase that brings 20 of the country’s best wrestlers to one venue for an early-season exhibition clash that sets the tone for the season. It will also feature four women’s matches and a D-II vs. D-III showcase.

This is the second time in three years the event has been held at Rec Hall, after hosting it in 2024 with a small army of Penn State wrestlers competing.

The event will be streamed on FloWrestling. Ticket information has not been released yet.
