Penn State Football Favored For Halloween Matchup Against Purdue

Whether it’s a good thing or not, Penn State football is back.

After Penn State fans experienced their first Saturday without a loss in four weeks, the Nittany Lions return to action against the 3-4 Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday with a chance to extend the no-loss streak another week.

The Nittany Lions enter Saturday as 7.5-point favorites, with -112 odds against the spread and -290 odds on the moneyline, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.

Eighty percent of bettors have taken Penn State to win outright over Purdue (+235), though bettors are closer to an even split, 55% to 45%, in favor of Penn State to cover 7.5 points.

The over/under is set at 54.5.

Purdue is also coming off a bye week and, like Penn State, entered it with a Big Ten loss on its mind. The Boilermakers dropped a shootout with Washington in their last outing in West Lafayette, Indiana, 38-26, to end their two-game Big Ten win streak.

Purdue’s defense was the story in the loss, forcing five turnovers but giving up 38 points. The Boilermakers seemingly only stopped the Huskies by forcing a turnover.

Purdue’s defense has been a concern; however, the offense has kept it in games.

Through seven games, the Boilermakers, led by Ryan Browne, have averaged just over 31 points per game. Despite allowing over 400 yards per game on defense, Purdue has a near one-to-one ratio in total yards produced and allowed.

Penn State has allowed nearly as many yards as Purdue, most of it coming on the ground. The Nittany Lions have allowed 172.3 yards per game on the ground (No. 99 nationally) and only 141.3 yards per game through the air (No. 3 nationally).

Purdue will try to exploit Penn State’s run defense’s shortcomings with running back Fame Ijeboi.

Ijeboi has racked up nine touchdowns and 568 rushing yards during his sophomore season, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. However, the rest of the running back room has struggled, averaging only 3.7 yards per carry.

The Nittany Lions are 17-3-1 all-time against the Boilermakers and have won their last 11 matchups. Penn State won its most recent matchup 49-10 in West Lafayette as 30-point favorites.
