Tre Bowman, a 1-star recruit out of Oakdale, Connecticut (via York, PA), gave his verbal commitment to Coach Ed DeChellis and the Penn State basketball program on Monday after making a visit to State College over the weekend. This will be Penn State's first signing of the late signing period, which starts on April 14th.
"Never-Satisfed" Bowman (as he is known in the MySpace world), a 6'4 shooting guard starred at Central York High School, averaged 22 points a game his senior year and then transferred to St. Thomas More HS in Connecticut to refine his game for the college level. During his prep season, he averaged 17 points a game while leading his team to the national semifinals. Bowman will take one of the 3 scholarships the Nittany Lions had available after Chris Babb and Bill Edwards' transfers and Andrew Ott's graduation.

After a month of playing baseball in Florida, Texas, and South Carolina (and a game in Pittsburgh), the Nittany Lions make their home debut this weekend with a four-game set against Hofstra.
The team started off the season hot with extra inning wins over Cincinnati and Seton Hall, as well as losing a heartbreaker to Notre Dame in extras. Since then, though, the team has hit a rough patch with a losing streak of seven games sandwiched between a pair of two game winning streaks. The Lions have dropped their last three, and they hope that the friendly confines of Medlar Field can mend their 6-11 record and provide that spark to make a run at a Big Ten title.
A player to keep an eye on is junior catcher Ben Heath. In the very young season, he already has 7 home runs and 22 runs batted in. His 7 dingers are more than any Nittany Lion had all of last year.
While there is a chance for showers for today's 3:35pm first pitch, Saturday and Sunday should be beautiful days to go out to the ballpark with sunny skies and highs near 50. Games start at 12:05pm on Saturday and Sunday, with Saturday's tilt being a doubleheader.
... no, not THAT journey. While teams like Cornell and Northern Iowa are still playing for a championship for the 2009-2010 season, Penn State and men's basketball Coach Ed DeChellis have officially turned the page. The 2010-2011 season had its unofficial start yesterday with the first spring workout at the Bryce Jordan Center. After the fun was over, DeChellis held his first press conference of the year and talked about a variety of subjects.

In what could be straight off a page of George Orwell's book 1984, a new kind of Big Brother is now watching over the world of social media, protecting colleges from potentially embarrassing situations involving their sports teams.
Read on to hear what Greg Myford, Penn State's associate athletic director, has to say on the issue.
A company called Sports Media Challenge (SMC) has come up with a search engine to check through Facebook, Twitter, and other popular websites to give schools notice on any inappropriate behavior involving a member of any of their athletic teams. This could lead to actions being taken against a player or coach before the situation gets out of hand and even saving the school from incurring any NCAA violations (see here USC football and Indiana basketball).
With the start of March Madness looming tomorrow, the sports writers here at Onward State have decided to show you our brackets and give you our "expert" advice in case you're still trying to settle what teams you have going to the Final Four. And just a spoiler alert, after getting robbed of a bid to the big dance for the second year in a row, Penn State will not be one of those teams.
I try to follow college basketball all across the nation in my spare time. Going home over Winter and Spring Breaks allowed me to watch some teams that I would not normally see here on campus (Thank you, DirecTV). Even though I have always followed the regular seasons closely in years past, it has never transferred to success in picking a bracket. But, in any case, read on for a few observations I've made that might help you out.
While most of us are thinking of sand and sunscreen for Spring Break, the Penn State Icers are thinking of ice and trophy polish. They are heading to Chicago to play in the ACHA Division 1 Men's Hockey National Championships with hopes of bringing home some hardware instead of a nice tan.
Throughout this season, the Icers have compiled a 27-4-1 record while winning the ESCHL regular season and tournament titles. Now there is only one thing left on their preseason to-do list: Win a national championship.
Penn State received the #2 seed in the national tournament and play the SUNY-Canton Kangaroos in the first round on Saturday. If they prevail over the marsupials on skates, they will play the winner of Oklahoma and Central Oklahoma on Sunday.
It will truly be a grueling stretch for the guys who will have to win 4 games in 5 days in order to claim their stake as the #1 team in the country. But after not being in the national championship game the last 2 years after making at least an appearance the previous 10 years, you can be sure that the barbarians on ice will be hungry to bring home a title (and not drunken beach stories) to State College.
