Doug Dooling, Jr.

I am a staff writer for Onward State. I graduated as a Nittany Lion with Honors in 2013. Now, I am back in Happy Valley to earn a degree at the Penn State Law. Outside of politics and government, my interests include college football, soccer, Irish history, and astronomy.

And to Think That I Saw It on Pollock Road

I don’t do drugs, nor do I condone their use. I prefer to live my life according to the words of Marcus Garvey. “The man who is not able to develop and use his mind is bound to be the slave of the other man who uses his mind.”

But dudes, Friday was 4/20, the high holy day of the stoner population. And I don’t know what those guys were on, but I thought it spread across campus and I had caught a whiff of it. I saw some freaky stuff on Pollock Road by the HUB, and second-hand dope seemed like the only logical explanation.

Putting the “Pennsylvania” in 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Pennsylvania. The most important state in the United States. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed within its borders. Three cities (Philadelphia, York and Lancaster) can proudly declare that they were the nation’s capital at some point in our country’s history. The turning point of the Civil War was fought at the Battle of Gettysburg.

Kony 2012: Remember the Night Still Happened

To refresh your memory, Kony is the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda. His forces kidnap children and turn them into soldiers or prostitutes. Last month, Invisible Children released a 29-minute video called Kony 2012 to increase widespread awareness about the fugitive by April 20, 2012. It went viral, and received over 100 million views in six days.

Student Affairs Introduces Electronic Chargers

Penn State, you flatter me. Thanks to UPUA, I can now pick up phone chargers at the Library. Last night in the HUB, I was startled when I saw the latest innovation to reach our campus. Student Affairs has installed four charger boxes on the first floor of the HUB. Each box contains eight chargers cables that can power cell phones and iPods.

Ten Questions with Homecoming Emcee Avery Williams

Last week, Homecoming 2012 announced that its emcees would be Avery Williams and Chrissy Bohn. Onward State had the opportunity to interview Avery on Friday. Williams, a senior majoring in aerospace engineering and Vice-Chair for Region II of the National Society of Black Engineers, discusses what motivated him to apply for emcee and what he hopes to accomplish in this position after the jump.

Penn Stater Elected to Lead PA College Republicans

Fresh off his victory as an off-campus representative, Anthony Christina won another important election on Saturday. However, Christina will have to make decisions more important than sunglasses and Donut Day. During its annual convention, the Pennsylvania Federation of College Republicans voted to name Christina as its Chairman for 2012-2013. As a result, a Penn Stater other than Rick Santorum will have a significant voice to address college students across the commonwealth for the most important election since the last one.
