We here at Onward State absolutely feel that everyone should have a good time, but not if it involves breaking the law and can cause serious damage to yourself and others. Police reports show that "In less than three hours State College Police arrested three drunk and dangerous drivers with very high blood alcohol levels early Thursday morning, January 14, 2010, in downtown State College." These men, aged 27 to 66, had blood alcohol levels of at least three times the legal limit of 0.08 each. According to the same report, "there were 908 drunk drivers arrested in Centre County and nearly 400 in State College alone [in 2009]."
That is an extraordinarily high percentage from State College. We may be the number 1 party school in the country, but there comes a moment where it goes from having a good time to becoming a hazard for everyone around you. There have been incidents where drunk drivers have killed students in recent times. At the risk of sounding like a public service announcement, you never know when bad decisions can end your life or another's, so please be safe.
La Vie is looking for a new Editor-in-Chief for the year from 2010-2011 and it could be you! La Vie is Penn State's yearbook, and it has been archiving the history of the University since 1889. So what can you do to be the new editor-in-chief for this great publication?
The criteria that interested students should meet if they wish to be selected as the new editor-in-chief are after the jump.
The best 3-day weekend has come and gone, which allowed for ample time to party study. Yesterday, there were quite a few students, professors, and members of the community who showed up bright and early to the HUB to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday(Penn State style!). Volunteers were given the option of serving the community in two ways:
Whether volunteers opted to go out to service sites and help or stay in the HUB and do service-to-go, it helped make the Penn State community a better place to live in, even if it was just for one day. Volunteers were rewarded justly though for their efforts though as they were given free t-shirts, free breakfast, AND a free lunch. As an added bonus, RAM Squad performed during the lunch break in Heritage Hall. Who says waking up early and doing community service on a Monday morning could be a waste of time? Not I. These memories will last forever (or until I throw out the free t-shirt).
If you are looking for more ways to get free stuff commemorate Dr. King, there are still 2 more events this week.
What do Ball State University, Thomas Edison State College, Rosemont College and City University of New York have in common (besides being inferior to Penn State)? These four schools are teaming up with the New York Times to offer distance learning courses for credit which will award certificates to students for completion of this course. The certificate will bear the seal of both The New York Times and the university offering the course.
Roughly two years ago, The New York Times decided to enter the distance education market in order to increase their revenue by cashing in on their name. Felice Nudelman, the director of education for the Times, thinks that a certificate bearing the name of the educational institution and the Times will "absolutely" make a résumé look more impressive. Nudelman also said that the content of the Times will probably "have as much depth and breadth as a good liberal arts curriculum." It must be noted that professors from the partnering institutions will be teaching the courses. The Times will advertise the programs online and in print, as well as supplying the professors and the students with resources incorporated in its New York Times Knowledge Network.
Penn State, on the other hand, actually has a good liberal arts curriculum. Even though we may not be partnered with the Times or any other outside institution, we still have a fantastic distance-ed program that many people choose. The World Campus and Career Services are partnered together to develop a series of online, self-guided career workshops which are available at no cost to students with active Penn State Access Accounts. Graduates from the Penn State World Campus are working for such companies as JPMorgan Chase, Boeing, and AT&T.
Do you think programs like Penn State's will suffer as a result of this? Read on to find out
