2010 Arts Fest Starts in Style

Artists from all over the United States did not waste any time promoting their artwork Thursday morning as Allen and Fraser streets were overran by eager buyers by the official opening at 10 a.m. Walking down Allen street this morning, the aroma of delicious carnival food and the sound of children laughter created a welcoming environment in downtown State College.

With scorching temperatures reaching into the mid-nineties, it seemed Arts Fest 2010 would have to battle the heat.  However, with freshly squeezed lemonade at every corner, mist stations and the water buckets on Allen Street, The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts managed to keep cool.

Arts Fest Becomes Literate

There will be another group of artists alongside the painters, potters, jewelers, photographers and musicians of Arts Fest 2010: authors. Arts Fest has now accepted the written word into its gallery and will definitely be at least twice as "Fest" with Book Fest PA.

The first annual Book Fest PA will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today in the Schlow Centre Region Library. Each hour, a different author will present their work, meet fans, sign books, and talk about writing experiences.

Sun Shines on Kids Day at Arts Fest

On Kids Day, $400 pieces of jewelry are put aside in favor of $4.00 handiwork creations. From 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM Wednesday afternoon, throngs of young entrepreneurs flocked to Allen St. to sell hand-crafted wares from lines of stalls filled with everything from bead necklaces to wooden toys to bound journals.

Though Arts Fest will cater to older tastes as the week goes on, Wednesday was fun for all ages, and especially to those youngsters proudly offering their own particular brand of art.

Returns In New Location

Support Webster’s: A Call to Arms

As we reported yesterday, Webster's Bookstore & Cafe is being effectively forced out of its downtown location at 126 S. Allen St by Scott Kresge, who, in conjunction with his mother Catherine Kresge, the owner of the property, declined to renew the current lease. Most signs point towards this being a business decision, one not subject to appeal.

Those in attendance at a support rally held last night at Webster's consider the eviction to be a call to arms, mostly because for them Webster's isn't simply a business. It's a community fixture integral to the culture of downtown State College. And the community is understandably upset.
