Penn State is planning to offer prorated housing and meal plan reimbursements due to the financial strain this virtual period poses.
Penn State's updated policy follows new United States travel restrictions from Europe, which were updated on Saturday, March 14 to include the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Penn State has extended its ban on university-affiliated student group travel through August due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"Penn State is essentially taking our money while blocking us from getting what we are paying for - essentially theft of our hard earned money. Many students struggle to pay off their student loan debt over their lifetime, and to see it squandered in this manner is something that none of us will stand for."
Penn State is requiring a 14-day self-quarantine period for travelers returning from Europe before returning to campus.
"The University Park Undergraduate Association acknowledges that these policies will have a significant, disruptive impact on every student, while also acknowledging the need to prioritize the safety of all students," their statement reads.
