In my article announcing the newly established Canning Workshops, I expressed my views on their purpose. While I still have no doubt that these came largely from University pressure, I believed vital information could be taken in by attentive participants, and that a review of basic safety tips never does one wrong. After having attended the very first workshop Monday afternoon, I was not shocked to find my opinion realized.

The last stop on Rodney Erickson's three-city alumni town hall tour might well have been his best performance, as the Penn State President fielded questions from alumni on a variety of topics ranging from Joe Paterno's firing to how a professor can achieve emeritus status. The event, held Friday evening in Manhattan, featured a less robust attendance than either of Erickson's Pennsylvania appearances--in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia--but the 300 who made the trek to the Financial District and the Downtown Marriott on a bone-chillingly cold winter night came prepared to ask the right questions.
The Penn State women's basketball team earned one of its most impressive wins of the season on Sunday against Nebraska, winning 93-73. All five starters for the No. 25 Lady Lions scored in double figures against the No. 23 Cornhuskers. Penn State's next contest at Illinois (6-11, 0-4 Big Ten) is next Thursday at 8 p.m. Despite their record, Illinois is proving a tough team to beat in its last few games, two of which were within three points, and one that went to overtime.
It's hard to believe it was only last week when Penn State (9-10, 1-5) dominated a solid Purdue squad. Ten days and three losses later, Penn State is once again struggling to find their identity and keep up with the size and talent of the Big Ten.
