Take Aways From Penn State’s Shutout Against Kent State

The Penn State Nittany Lions posted a convincing, decisive win against the Kent State Golden Flashes on Saturday, dominating the team in all three phases en route to a 34-0 victory. Christian Hackenberg and the pass game struggled, but the run game, the defense, and the special teams unit all played great in the team's final non-conference matchup. Here's what we learned about the Nittany Lions in Saturday's game.

Nittany Lions Shut Out Kent State 34-0 In The Rain

It was a rainy afternoon at Beaver Stadium. Neither team managed to get the pass game going as Christian Hackenberg had his worst game as a Penn Stater. The run game was a different story. Zach Zwinak, Bill Belton, and Akeel Lynch combined for 287 yards in the game on 42 carries for a 6.8 yards per carry average. Zwinak scored three short goal-line touchdowns and Belton caught a ball from Hackenberg that led to a score in a game that Penn State won 34-0, the first shutout for the Nittany Lions since 2010 against Kent State.

Gameday Coverage: Penn State vs. Kent State

Good afternoon from State College where the Penn State Nittany Lions (2-1) are set to face the Kent State Golden Flashes (1-2) in the last non-conference game of the season. Penn State enters the game coming off of a tough loss in a close battle with Central Florida last Saturday under the lights at Beaver Stadium. Kent State won its first game of the season against Liberty before suffering decisive losses to Bowling Green and LSU over the last two weeks. The Golden Flashes are led by head coach Paul Haynes who is in his first season at the helm. Bill O'Brien is facing Kent State for the first time as Penn State's head coach and will look to add on to the Nittany Lions’ perfect record (3-0) against the Golden Flashes.

Walking around campus this week, you may have seen copies of the "Blue & White Print: A Plan for the Future of The Pennsylvania State University" lying around for students to pick up. The nifty 16-page booklet includes suggestions for improvement in five aspects of university life including tradition, academics, shared governance, Board of Trustees, and student government.

On Culture and #Culture

Maybe we take our rivalry with Ohio State very seriously, or maybe we mentally check out of a Friday afternoon class to wonder about which quarterback is going to start Saturday or think about getting tailgate supplies. It's exciting, and it's a good way for a lot of us, 110,000 strong, to come together and blow off steam and rally around Penn State. I think it's great that starting October 1, Penn State will conduct a survey to really take the pulse of the real culture here. Regardless of whether there's a problem or not, it's never a bad idea to step back and reevaluate.
