Arlen Spector Encourages Public Service

The Collegian had a nice, if predictable, guest column today by Senator Arlen Spector. Spector asked Penn State students to consider careers in public service.

As students with all the idealism and energy of youth, I urge you to consider a career in politics or government.

Spector is a good man. As an 80 year old, he will run for re-election in 2010. Spector is the nation’s fifth oldest senator. Let’s hope he can work for Pennsylvania until he’s as old as Robert Bryd (the 91 year old Senator from West Virginia).

Tuition may be too damn high, but over the long-run, undergraduate degrees are definitely worth the cost. But Penn State could be so much more. It used to be, I think.
